Exciting News!
Hi everyone! I am very excited to announce that I won first place in the National Wildlife Federation Annual Photo Contest, youth category. The image is of two bull elk fighting from Banff National Park, which I posted in the wildlife gallery earlier this year. The prize is an Apple iPad, which made me so excited when I learned I won it. The image should be in the December/January issue of National Wildlife magazine and on their website (not sure when they are putting the winning photos up on the website, though).

I am also happy to announce that I was named runner-up in the Canadian Geographic Wildlife Photography of the Year photo contest, in the youth category. The image was of a Bohemian Waxwing, the same Bohemian Waxwing picture I posted a couple months ago in the avian gallery but without the cloning. I also have two honourable mentions in that contest. The first I was notified for was my American Avocet with the wings spread out and the head dipped down without the cloning of the grass from its beak. The second, which I was very happy about, is my brown phase black bear cub on a tree with the mom in the background. It was my first post on NPN. The Bohemian Waxwing will be in the December issue of Canadian Geographic magazine, and the two honourable mentions (along with the Waxwing) will be posted on their website in early January.

The NWF image is attached above and the Canadian Geographic images are attached below.

Thanks for looking!

This is the Runner-up in Canadian Geographic.

I was very happy when I found out this was the image they chose out of the 3 finalists.

This is one of the honourable mentions in Canadian Geographic.

I really wasn't sure if they were going to pick this one given the grass going through his beak, especially because I thought I had some better contenders than this one. I guess it depends on what the judges are looking for  !

This is the second honourable mention in Canadian Geographic.

I was so happy they chose this one! I really wanted one of my bear images to be chosen (I entered 3) because they are my favourite animal to photograph. I have to admit, though, that I was hoping they would choose my "Dandelion Bear" image because he is one of my favourite bears that we've photographed in Waterton.

Those certainly are excellent photos. I like them all but especially the one of the waxwings. That one is just so elegant with sharp focus, great detail and pose, and a wonderfully complementary palette of colors. I'd be happy to say any of them were mine. Congratulations.

Thanks so much everyone! I am so excited!

It's clear that NPN is a great place to help with photography. I have learned a lot and its helped me do better with my images.

I also saw that Joe Sulik was Specially Commended in the Veolia photo contest this year. It's cool that another young photographer from NPN is doing good with photography.

Thanks again, everyone!

Keep up the good work! Love that bear photograph. Your building a great portfolio for your future endeavors. There's a great opportunity out there especially for future woman professional photographers. The field is wide open.
