Need Help With Plant Identification
I've been spending a lot of time hiking and four wheeling to find some exciting new locations for a photo tour I'm leading next year called Undiscovered Moab. I found this location over the weekend and returned tonight as a storm broke to photograph an incredible sunset. I had to desaturate the red and yellow channels a bit to bring the cliffs back to reality. Crazy!

Can anyone identify the yellow foliage in the foreground? It's growing in a small sand dune surrounded by mormon tea, sagebrush and mules ear plants at around 4,000'. I haven't a clue and I'd like to know what it is, so please feel free to educate me.

Canon 5D2, 24-105mm lens, no filters, single exposure (yes, the 5D2 continues to blow me away with its incredible dynamic range)

Bret - do you have any shots showing the foliage in more detail? My guess would be a variety of Rabbitbrush.

You got me, but I sure do like the comp and color in this!

Rick: I didn't think to shoot any close-ups. It doesn't look like any rabbitbrush I've seen, which is part of what is throwing me off.

Morris: Thanks for the kind words!

They look like dead/dry mule's ears to me, Bret. Can you post a 100% crop of the leaves?

There were plenty of dead/dry mule's ears out there, Guy, but not this plant. The wind was blowing and they're mostly blurry but I'll try to post a 100% crop when I get home tomorrow. It's weird, I've never seen anything like it. This was the biggest one in the area but there were a few others, much smaller.

Bret, I don't know either but I love the image.

Here's a full crop of the foreground plant.

Haven't a clue about the plant, but really like the image, especially the transitioning light levels on the cliffs.
