Big Lava Bed Vine Maple
This image was taken on October 6th in the area known as Big Lava Bed in the Gifford Pinchot along FR 66. The day was nicely overcast and misty greatly enhancing the saturation of the lava and vine maple. This was the peak of the color at this location as one week later the color went very dull and two weeks later the leaves had fallen. I have other images taken in this location that I will post as time permits.

Canon EOS 5D MKII
0.4 sec at f11, ISO 400

This is a repost to try to correct for the strange reds that sometimes occur when converting from ProPhoto to sRGB and then a Save For The Web. This problem does not exist for all colors just some of the more saturated reds and perhaps others. In CS5 I added a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to the image prior to the Save For The Web but after converting to sRGB and have changed the Proof Setup to Monitor. I can't believe we are here in 2011 and still do not have accurate color management in our browsers! Yes some do have a derivation of color management but not in the same way that LR and CS have.

I know what you mean about the color management issue, what a pain. I suspect wide-gamut monitors are also a big variable in how these photos compare. I do like the color in this guy (in both photos actually  ).

OK, I promise this will be the last update. I went back to my original image and prepared it for the web. Just prior to saving I duplicated it and changed the proof setup to Monitor as before. Then I arranged both side to side and on the duplicate I first added a curves adjustment layer and tweaked up the shadows slightly. Next I created a luminosity mask that targets only the already saturated colors using an action from Tony Kuyper. Applying this mask to a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer I adjusted the saturation and hue. Since the luminosity mask only affects the most saturated colors the Hue/Saturation adjustment is limited and does not impact the less saturated colors.

John,

Thanks for your reply. The tif version of this image really has outstanding color and detail that just does not show through in the small jpeg verion. Hope to print a large print soon.
