It's not what you think - check it out!

It is a refreshing break from all of this Nature! Shooting different subjects keeps our eyes fresh, I think. Looking forward to seeing other's work from different subjects. And the first entries are already worth viewing!
Sorry, but I find the title very distasteful. Sharon

Sharon, come up with a catchy name this isn't as "distasteful" and we'll consider it.
A few points to ponder;
1. The last time we tried this and called it "Off Topic Photo" it didn't get as much traffic in months as the "Road Kill forum" has gotten in a few days.
2. Google "Road Kill" and check out all of those restaurants with that name!

Jim,
Thanks for putting up the new forum. Kinda wish it was a gallery so we could see thumbnails, but I understand and appreciate the desire to make it more of a discussion of the photograph or techniques rather than just a critique of a pretty picture.... Looks like good traffic already. I may have some to contribute as well.
While I might not go so far as Sharon, and I agree with you it does cause people to click on the forum name, but considering what the bulk of this site is and represents, the forum name could be offensive to some.
So you asked for some suggestions, how about:
The Attic
The Sock drawer
Garage
Potpourri
Heard from others:
Salad Bowl
Odds and Ends
Human Nature
Regardless, I think the forum will get some good play this time around. Thanks for setting it up.

Thanks Lon! To all, keep the forum name suggestions coming!

1/NPN Forum
Reciprocal of NPN, or the reciprocal of nature photography.
reciprocal - noun; something that is reciprocal to something else; equivalent; counterpart; compliment
I would much prefer this as a gallery, also, because of being able to see the thumbnails and also because of not having all the post titles in the "All Topics" forum listing. It seems to me that the same conversation could take place in a gallery.

The problem is that just about EVERYTHING has the potential to "bother" someone. If its so bland it bothers no one, I'll submit its boring and attracts no attention at all, just like the previous "off topic" forum. The problem with some names suggested here they seem to have either regional or idiosyncratic meanings. Most of them I really don't "get." For example, if i saw a forum marked "Garage," I'd immediately be thinking of duck decoys, duckboat, and other off-season hunting items along with tools and used motor oil. . Some of the rest of the suggestions are WAY too bland. I'd like to see something clever and maybe just a bit on the edge. I think most people do have a good sense of humor. FWIW, "Roadkill" wasn't my suggestion. Mine was "Catch of the Day," but I have no doubt that at least 3% of the population would have a problem with that for whatever reason. Whatever the name is, it does need to be clever and a bit edgy. Otherwise, it will starve. I live in a rural area with nature right outside my door. I'm very used to seeing "roadkill" pretty much everywhere. I do understand that people who are only occasional visitors to lands beyond the city limit might not see the humor. A thought: Jim, can you set up a poll?
NPN Open Hearth...but....No need to change it just cause I don't like it...I can live with it. Just seemed strange to me on a nature forum...at first I thought it was a Halloween joke. Sharon

...at first I thought it was a Halloween joke.
That's actually a very reasonable conclusion! My sense of humor is a bit "off" at times.
The forum is off to a great start - thanks to all who are using it!

I'm with you DJ, but I'm coming from the position of moderating the Environmental Photojournalism gallery. Taken literally, "road kill" is a bigger part of nature photography (and problem) than any of us like to admit.
Taken figuratively, I see Road Kill in the context of the intent of this forum in kind of the same light. It's the shooting we do outside of nature photography using the same gear, and often the same skills and lessons learned in nature.
The name doesn't matter a whit to me either way. What matters is that people are responding with posts, and especially comments. I see a different character to the comments than occurs most of the time in galleries, just as the browsing experience without thumbnails is also different. Both are a worthwhile departure from the gallery format, so I'll advocate that the format be continued. Just as I'll advocate against a WP for the Road Kill Forum. It will lose it's impact and effectiveness as a forum if reduced to a competition.

I agree with Hank's comments above. The forum is obviously less formal and meant to allow people to let their hair down a bit and have some fun! I kind of think of nature photographers out all day hard at work, and at the end of the day they show up at a small town (or neighborhood) bar and swap stories not "work" related. Note my own last photo showing the final resting place of Mike Poop. And who knew Jim's father-n-law is Howard Stern?
I like Lon's "The Sock drawer." "Road Kill" l might be catchy, but doesn't convey a thing about the forum being a miscellaneous catch-all.

Melange
or
The Studio

I came up with a few suggestions to toss into the ring:
Unnatural
Out There
The Contrarian
Diversions
Deviations
Material World
On the Edge
I too think "Road Kill" should be a gallery instead of a discussion forum since there seems to be a lot of interest and a lot of fantastic work.
I'll toss in a couple; Viewpoint
-Not Too Shabby-: although I prefer -Shabby Shots-, which has a nice on-edge ring to it.
As for titles I like Barbara's "The Rest of the Story" and my contribution, "The Other Side".
The forum is off to a great start - thanks to all who are using it!
