Rocketfish™ - 65" Carbon Fiber Tripod ???

I currently use a Bogen 3221. It works fine, but gets heavy when carried along with a 20D, 5D, and 2 pieces of L glass. The budget is tight these days so I can't pop for 300 to 600 for the newest Bogens, etc. I saw the Rocketfish at the local electronics chain and it seemed well built being rated for 18 lbs. My only concern was if I could remove the head and replace it with my Bogen 322RC2 grip. I would think the head mounting screw is standard.

Does anyone have experience with these?

I'm not familar with that tripod but having used the Bogen you have for years, I'm hard pressed to believe that it will be an improvement over your current tripod, especially given the budget constraints you listed. As far as inexpensive, solid, more or less light weight tripods go, the 3221 is probably the best deal on the market.

I've never heard of them myself, but I was looking into the Flashpoint carbon fiber tripods that Adorama sells. They are certainly reasonably priced, though I'm not sure about quality.

If it is the same one I bought, you could remove the head and I was able to put my Manfrotto 496RC2 Ball Head on it. However, I broke one of the legs in less than 6 months. After trying to get a straight answer from Rocketfish on repair, I finally just took it back to Best Buy where they replaced it with no questions asked. I sold it shortly afterwards and bought a much better tripod. I would recommend spending a little more money and getting something better, it will be cheaper in the long run.

As far as Flashpoints go, there was a review posted here a few months ago and I believe that person had issues with it breaking too.

Guy, use the search engine at the top right of this forum for "Rocketpoint tripod" - you'll find Bret Edge's comprehensive review.

The Rocketfish legs seem good to me, however I will replace the head at some point.

My concerns always are spare parts for self-repair and service options for advanced help.

I'm devious about protecting my own investments, so when considering another brand of tripod a few years back I pretended to be an owner and started asking for sources of parts and repair services. I didn't like the answers I got, so decided not to buy the tripod, saving myself lots of money and heartburn in the process. I'd sure do the same with the Rocketfish company before buying.
