Here's a snow photo from early this afternoon of that single tree in a field south of Chatfield State Park. At the risk of being burned at the stake, I will admit that I did use HDR on this version.
C&C welcome.

Very angelic photo - it has lots of halos.
Nothing wrong with hdr when it's done right and doesn't show aftereffects. Here it looks like everything dark has a white keyline around it. Maybe play with the tonal range percentage and pixel count sliders in the shadows part of shadow/highlight. It's totally do-able.

This is really nice! The placement of the tree is just right. I even like where it intersects the horizon line.
There's nothing wrong with HDR techniques when they are as subtle as this one. I wiuldn't have guessed had you not said anything. There are a few very minor HDR haloes along the tree top and around the tallest group of vegetation just below and right of the tree, but that could be from resizing for this forum. The snow could stand to be brightened up a bit, as well.
Really a fine way to convey cold and empty, Jim!

Thanks. I did brighten up the image a little more and I don't see any halo anywhere around the top of the tree in the 13x19 print that I just made. I'm not convinced that what may look like a possible halo around only parts of the bottom part of the tree isn't only an illusion from the snow patterns. I wouldn't be surprised if the extreme down-sizing for this forum causes many undesireable consequences.

I think that what Todd may believe are the effects of poorly processed HDR, is really the fact that everything sticking up has snow glued to the left side. I've cropped out a small section of the image trying to show that detail, but between the whites all blending together and the poor resolution in this small section, I don't know if it will be clear enough to see. Anyway, here it is...
Regardless, like I wrote before, my 13x19 looks fine and I'll be offering it framed for sale at the Roxborough Art Show this weekend.
