I've never been asked this one nor have I seen it posted anywhere on NPN quite this way. Years ago I was asked for permission to use an image of mine that the person wanted to paint. I said yes. All I asked at the time was that she send me a picture of the final result. I got an e-mail over the weekend with a link to the finished piece. I replied thanking her and saying it was beautiful etc etc etc. I got a second e-mail from her asking this:

"I wonder how much you would charge me to use some of your photos as references for paintings I wish to sell? You would not need to send them to me; I could use them from your site. If you prefer not, then I will just continue to enjoy them visually...they are quite lovely!
If you are willing to sell rights, let me know what your terms are (price per use or purchase rights with unlimited use or however you do it normally; I find a multitude of ways people set that up) and where to send you a check or paypal or whatever pay methods you accept."

She is a legitimate artist working in oils and pastels. It sounds similar to magazine or other printed materials use rights to me which I have done in the past. I'd really appreciate your thoughts on this new twist on image usage rights (for me anyway).
Thanks!

I would highly recommend purchasing fotoquote I just looked it up and there are 2 sections, one under other 'artist rendering non commerical' and one under advertising print 'art rendering advertising' he gives recommend prices and a lot of good advice. I found the software here on NPN from other members that have had great success with it

You're right, Pam, it's similar to leasing rights for a magazine or whatever. As derivative works, she needs to pay you, the amount of which I'm not sure of.

I've done this a few times and used fotoquote to get a range of values - the range is WIDE. I ended up charging on the lower end for the artists I've worked with - they were local, not famous, not selling their work for $1,000s, etc...

think about this:
If the artist is good, he or she might sell the painting for hundred maybe thousands of dollars. Just a thought.

I charged a fine-art painter in Alaska $150 each for the right to use two of my images as references. Although I don't know the painting world, I would guess she had a local following in Alaska but was unknown in the Lower 48.
