Alstrom Point
Journeyed for the first time to Alstrom Point above Gunsight Bay of Lake Powell last weekend. Skies were mostly overcast both days, so the sunrises and sunsets were less than optimum. I will definitely go back and try again. For some reason, I feel this location would be great to have the evening earth shadow of blue and pink for the sky.

I took several pano stitches for experimentation. Here is one and a larger version to show some detail. Open to any suggestions.

#2 The best sunset became. Single image double processed for the sky.

#3 The full moon made a brief appearance before rising behind the clouds.

AMAZING series Doug! I love them all but that large version is killer. I'm really pleased that Jim put this option in...now if we could just get him to let you make them all large...just kidding Jim. :toast: :toast:

Such great detail is seen in those canyon walls, especially when looking at the large pano version! I love the comp of #1 the best but the light on #2 wonderfully brings out the color of the red rocks. This is definitely a place to return to when a similar or better sunset occurs. The moon on #3 gives the scene a pleasing mysterious look too.

Great series Doug. I've been near Gunsight in a boat but never from the top of the hill. I'm partial to #4 with the mountain right there in the gunsight. Really like all of them though. Thanks for sharing.

Doug,
Is Alstrom accessible with 2wd high clearance vehicle? Would like to make it there my next trip to Page. Nice images, by the way

Jack & Bill, thanks.

@Joe, I think you would be fine with the high clearance. There is a rocky stretch at the end. I would not go when wet though, as most of the road after leaving Big Water is the slippery bentonite clay.

@Josh, Sunday evening saw some yellow clouds to the west behind me, which put the little but nice glow on the rock. Yes, certainly need to go back. The rising full moon in March and April 2012 will be in a favorable position over or near Navajo Mtn.

Beautiful series Doug. That large version is a real treat. I might head up there in the next few weeks if the weather is inviting.

I like the perspective on shot #5. A lot of lines and textures to keep the eye wandering around the image.

Great stuff, Doug! I haven't seen much from this area, didn't expect those cliffs to be so stripey. I love the light in #2, but the comp in #4 is my favorite.

I'm also a big fan of the composition of #4, and my favorite is actually #5. Great way to take advantage of less than optimal light.
Well worth revisiting under more favorable conditions!

Number 3 would have been killer if the light had happened. Nice collection of images! :toast:
