Looking for feedback on conditions at Bosque this year. Heard that it was very dry much like Texas drought this year. Anybody been down there yet this Fall? I haven't picked up the camera since getting back from Africa in September. Moved to Castle Rock recently and was consumed with packing. Appreciate any feedback.

Bob, there's a brief discussion here, doesn't sound great, but maybe not too dire either. Otherwise, I'd check the refuge web site, or call them and see what they say. It's gotten a little bit colder here lately, which is usually good news for Bosque visits, but it was pretty warm last week.

Give us an update if you go!

I just got back from a couple of days at Bosque. Conditions were actually quite good. Lots of Geese and cranes ( 40K geese, 14 K cranes.) The crane pools along highway 1 are filled and the area around the Flight deck has been cleared of most of the vegetation that choked the pool last year. Not much corn on the Farm loop but the geese and cranes were feeding in several newly plowed fields.. They have opened a temporary extension north off the farm loop to access better feeding fields or two periods Nov 21-Dec 11, and Jan 14-Feb20.

Just came back from Bosque - nice conditions out there .
As mentioned by Steve the temporary extension is a good place to see the cranes real close, many of them are very near to the road as well.

Hey Bob, I just got back last night and the water levels are a tiny bit low in a couple areas, but it isn't really effecting the bird count. I heard that Texas is super dry right now and a lot of the experts are expecting record numbers at Bosque this year as a result. Here was the latest bird count when I looked yesterday before I left:
Cranes: 15,000
Light Geese: 56,000
Ducks: 90,000
Good luck and bring a lot of memory cards!
