Young Red Squirrel
One of this summer's youngsters. A real character and very bold but the older Squirrels really showed no mercy so this was the sulking tree. This one is much bigger now and able to hold his own. Ears tufts are coming along nicely too, just need a bit of snow...

1D4 500mm ISO 800 125 sec @ f/4 full frame from hide :wavey:

Awwwww cute. Some might say it's a bit tight in the frame but I say variety is fine. Nowt wrong with a good close up and as this one has the cute factor all over it then I reckon its a good un!

Not easy conditions with the wet perch and the highlights caused... large in frame yes, but that is always a personal preference and for presentation here it is fine, looking at the techs you were pushing it but for me I would have liked a touch more DoF, however that is a minor nit of an endearing image...

A touch too close for me Simon but that's a personal preference rather than a criticism. Never easy with a fixed focal lens in a hide. Perhaps a 100-400mm would be a better choice of weapon?

Cracking image of a red squirrel! :toast: A little more DOF would have been nice but I guess the lighting was pretty poor. I think it is just right in the frame, again personal preference. I really like the wet branch, gives a real feel for the conditions at the time.
Nick.

Thanks guys  It was a rough old day with not much light but the chance to get an image of a young'un was too good to miss (they are usually 100mph everywhere). I only had the big gun there that day but my weapon of choice in the hide is usually a 300mm with or without an extender.

A bit large in the frame for my taste, but I agree with Paul about the cute factor.

From a former red squirrel conservation officer, this is just the sort of picture which I found got the best reception from the general public. Cute indeed. :toast:

looks good to me Simon, I look forward to seeing some in the snow. Size in frame looks OK in the smaller version but maybe a touch smaller in the frame would be better in the larger version.
