Just wondering what everyone uses when they sign photographs, Canvas and Textured art paper?
What about Canvas? It seems that the ones I have on my walls here at home are starting to fade and that was done with a Sharpie.

Pencil never fades. The "leads" are made of graphite and clay. It doesn't work as well on canvas or heavily coated paper however. Try a relatively soft pencil (I like 2B grade) on scrapes of the paper you will be signing. Alternatively get a fine marker with pigment ink.

I use a pencil on art paper, if it doesn't have too much texture. I haven't found anything good for canvas, so excellent question!

Cindy,

I use Sakura archival pens for signing photographic prints and mats. Most art and/or craft supplies will carry them. I sign all prints on the back, without exception. Certain prints also get signed on the front. The pens come in a variety of colors, but I use primarily black or brown with teh '05' tip. Pencil also works, bu tbe sure to apply a fixitive spray or the pencil may smudge if mishandled. The archival pens do not suffer from this shortcoming.

Canvas is a bit more difficult and I have not produced many canvas prints to date, preferring the more traditional paper prints. That said, I have used American Crafts archival Metallic Markers in the Medium tip for signing both the front and back of canvas prints with good results.

Hope that helps!

Sakura Pigma, Micron 03 #1 Archival Ink (black). Just use them and don't worry about it.
