Wideangle Fly Agaric
I do always like to try wideangle shots of fungi and other 'macro' subjects whenever possible but find it is deceptively difficult to get it right. This image was taken with a fisheye lens which was almost touching the fungi making it difficult to balance the lighting of the foreground and background. I also find it tricky to get the DOF right, particularly in terms of how much detail there is in the background. Too much detail and the subject doesn't stand out enough in my opinion. Anyway, all views appreciated.

Canon 60D with Tokina 10-17mm fisheye at 10mm, f9, 1/250, ISO 400.

Hi Matt
I do a lot of this myself and I think its a great way to show fungi. The subject and background look fine to me. My only small nit is the position of the agaric. Maybe a bit up and to the left- it seems a little too far down in the corner( only a tad mind )
Makes a nice change though.
Cheers

I like this sort of image and always struggle to get anything that I am satisfied with... this is excellent, although I too agree with John and would like the agaric a little higher in the frame, really to avoid the lens aberations in the corners...

Matt

T'is fungi season and I too have been trying to obtain an image not to different. I used the wide angle 16-35mm for a change really but failed to secure an image to your standard. Lighting is so difficult.

I like this type of thing and I like this shot. I would agree with John on the positioning though

I think the positioning of the fungi is a problem. If you move it up, as Bob and John suggest, you can only do so by cropping part of that oof tree in the background (assuming this shot is full frame), or by moving back slightly and making the fungi relatively smaller and therefore less dominant. No easy answers, but I do like it as it is.

thanks all for the feedback, much appreciated. I tend to agree about the position of the fungi though I think it only needs to be a little higher and to the left. This one is full frame but I do have others, I think, with a bit more room around the fungi.

I do like this one a lot Matt but as you suggest it would be interesting to see one with the background slightly more diffuse in order to compare.

I really like this, although agree about its position :toast: :toast:
