Eclipse over CNM
I had a place all picked out at the Saddlehorn campground to shoot the eclipse, only to realize when I arrived the moon was waaaay too close to the horizon for it to work. So I drove around the corner, found some cliffs to use in the FG, and went to it. Here is my pathetic attempt. I only have a 200 mm lens, and used a 2X teleconverter to help make the moon a little larger. I wish I had done more research on how to shoot the eclipse (exposure, SS, etc.) I put it on AV, shot it wide open at 4.0 and let the camera expose. Anyway, it was cool to see the eclipse, and it was a learning experience.

I made my first attempt at an eclipse shot last December, and like you, found it to be a great learning experience.
Fortunately, I was shooting from our back deck and able to quickly process a few images to check exposure and sharpness.

Having totality at sunrise certainly made this one more challenging, but much more interesting.

I think your 400mm is just fine.

Pretty good all things considered, Angela! Having the eclipse so close to the horizon really makes one want to include landscape features, but that was easier said than done. I'd say you did quite well getting some redrock and trees with a very nice and visible moon.

Not bad at all Angela for your first attempt  You got out there and tried which is more than my lazy butt did!

Angela, due to the timing with the sun this wasn't the easiest eclipse to photograph, so given that you did a great job. Adding terra firma for perspective makes the shot. I shot with the 200 + 2.0x TC too, that's the longest I have, and it's the one time I wish I didn't have a full frame sensor, the extra 1.6x factor would have been nce, lol.

Hey I was up in GJ the third week of October on a business trip and did go up on CNM one of the days. I forgot you're there, maybe we could have met for a quick twilight shoot at Monument Canyon or something... would have been my first in-person meetup with a fellow NPN'er. I need to write things down more, the 40-something memory cells need a reformat or something.

Great capture for this eclipse. I had a lot of trouble photographing it too. Once it started getting near the horizon it seemed to get really hazy and it moved FAST! You did better than I did, indeed it was a learning experience.
