Lunar Eclipse at Dantes View overlooking Death Valley.
Definitely a challenge. With nothing longer than a 24-105 on a 7D, I looked for a location that would balance the smaller moon. Dantes View was it.
I was hoping the dry lake below at Badwater would reflect more of the red tones; instead the timing was just about spot on for early dawn glow. This was about the peak as the moon rapidly vanished in the dawn and approaching clouds.
One image, 10 sec at f/13, ISO 200. 55mm (88 mm crop) on a 7D. Still doing some post - I'd like to punch up the ridge a bit more and still not comfortable with overall brightness - and open to suggestions.
That was a fun 2+ hour drive from Vegas at 2:30 am. It was that or sleep in.

Reposting a slightly bluer and brighter version. Looks ok in IE; in Firefox it looks far too purple compared to my aRGB version on a calibrated display. I have heard FireFox accounts for color space; true?

I like the second one better because the foreground is more discernible and it accurately reflects the light values of early dawn in a deep valley. Firefox is more accurate colorspace wise as you mentioned and is the only browser I bother with. Really like the mood this evokes.

Perfect exposure on the eclipsed moon. Love that color. Definitely worth losing a little sleep.
You guys out west were fortunate to have totality before sunrise.
I thought moonset over the eastern Sierras from the Alabama Hills would have been great, but just couldn't get up early enough.

Now that would have been one heck of a drive from Colorado! :)
I agree that would have been an excellent location.
There is a meadow at 10000' southwest of Bishop called Coyote Flats that offers some foreground streams/rocks and a nice view of the same snow-capped eastern Sierras. I definitely could have spent the night up there. I might have needed some gloves tho! It was plenty cold where I was.

Ridge slightly punched per my original notes.
(edit) I'll probably run an optimized workflow to clean things up a bit. Overall a good start to a good weekend. Thanks everyone!

CA certainly looked like a good place to be for this. Cool shot, Karl!

Glad you got some red moon at DV. Preference to the second version with the enhanced ridge and faint sky detail.

Looks like it was a lovely place to be to witness this. I like the strong reds and blues in this color balance, especially in your latest repost. Really cool!

In case anyone drops by this older thread, here is the final edit - or at least until I get some other thought and dive back into Photoshop.
I reduced the color temp down to around 4200 - still not quite where it could be but about as blue as I can stand. Made this adjustment after getting some good looks at the skies around that time here in Vegas.
