Hi...

Has anyone done a comparession between the new 500mm f/4L IS II USM and the old Canon 500mm f/4L IS USM lens ? What are the special features in the new one?

Since the new 500 f/4 is not available yet, there are not any real world hands on comparisons.

I did a quick comparison: the new one is twice as expensive as the old one. Honestly, I can't imagine a single feature that would make that worthwhile.

I second that. The image quality on the original 500mm is superb, how can you make it 100% better (i.e. twice as good) to match 100% more bucks to buy the thing? Canon pulled that with their TCs... the new v3 models are twice the price. Somebody in Canon Marketing left their clue on a bus seat somewhere.

Thanks for the review. Not that Canon has withdrawn the earlier model will they still service the old model? and hor how long?

I saw the price of the new one, and quickly began searching for the old one. I was able to find a very lightly used one on eBay , and couldn't be happier. If you are thinking about a 500mm I'd try to get the old one or wait several years for when Canon is forced to lower the price of the new one... Good luck!
