FOLLOW-UP: About 3 weeks after this post the bird was found dead from stress.
I received this today from the Colorado Birder's Group. I'm going to take down the post on the owl's location:
I was very upset when I heard about the trespassing and photographers close approaching the Snowy Owl. After seeing photographers trespassing on private yards to get close to the Peyton Snowy Owl 2009-10, I should not be surprised. Furthermore, birders and photographers who respect private property and birds do not need any such reminder as this. Unfortunately, birders and photographers who do not respect private property ignore this reminder anyway. I suggest not purchasing photos from anyone that cannot demonstrate equipment with extremely expensive and long range lens. There's not much else we can do.
Rare wildlife opportunities bring out unethical photographers, don't they? There's nothing wrong with talking to, and educating people - even photographing them and posting images of the offenders online to make a point. Besides traipsing through private property uninvited, many folks think that all photographers will do anything possible to make an image and that sucks. Yep, it's a 600mm situation - otherwise have a look with binocs and forget about making a documentary picture.
