On January 6, 1912 New Mexico was admitted as the 47th state of the union. Celebrate the Centennial of the Land of Enchantment by posting your photos taken in the state for this month's theme: "New Mexico." Photos can be landscapes of spots such as White Sands National Monument or Carlsbad Caverns National Park, wildlife photos from places such as Bosque Del Apache Refuge, shots of historic areas including the Ancestral Puebloan sites of Bandelier and Chaco Canyon or the missions along the High Road to Taos ...and many more. There are a myriad of photogenic places in New Mexico so let's see the ones you have taken here in this thread!

To get the thread started, here's a photo of a ristra and the vivid blue doors of an adobe building near the St. Francis de Asis Church in Taos.

Pueblo Bonito, Chaco Canyon, NM

Looks familiar Phil. That's a sweet perspective of Pueblo Bonito Scott!
Here's a photo from another cool place in NM: Petroglyph National Monument near Albuquerque.
Hate to admit this, but never been to Taos! I really want to go! great stuff so far! Love that perspective too Scott!
Speaking of Pueblo Bonito.... What an amazing place to visit and photograph. It's been 6-7 years since I've been there, hopefully I'll get back soon! This trip we had a great sunset, and super nice ranger who let us shoot a tad longer than normal ( I think he didn't mind enjoying the awesome sunset too.)
Wow! Really outstanding images here. Guess I'll post mine anyway. My daughter went to ENMUR in Roswell for a few years and the trips to visit her allowed me to experience and photograph several areas of New Mexico. Here's a couple of my favorites. First my tribute to Ansel Adams' fondness for San Francisco de Asis in Taos.
Alien Trees. Sunrise in the pecan groves west of Roswell. Some haze in the air made the sunrise really red...or was it the alien influence? You decide.

You guys are killing me with all these great shots...I am jealous! I guess I need to put NM on my list for this year and Phil, I want to know where those beautiful adobe pictures were shot!!

Wow! So many great shots of the Land of Enchantment! Can't wait to see more! Love the lava tube, Scott! Unfortunately, they are all off limits now due to the White Nose Syndrome affecting bats. Hope they reopen soon!

Another one of San Francisco de Asis. I posted this in CSNP back in August, but I just couldn't resist this tribute to New Mexico!
Posted by Phillip Noll on January 5, 2012 at 11:15 PM
Great stuff everyone! You all should come down here more often!
I'll offer up a couple. First, to me this is an archetypical New Mexico kind of view: pinon/juniper hills, lots of open space, scruffy mountain ranges, and gorgeous light. This is overlooking La Jencia Plain west of Socorro. A little larger.
And here's a very non-typical New Mexico view: fall maples in the Manzano Mountains.
Posted by Phillip Noll on January 6, 2012 at 10:27 AM
Let's get deep......................deep in the Jemez Mountains!
Posted by Amy Lindsey on January 6, 2012 at 11:30 AM
I haven't spent much time in NM and didn't realize how many great places there were. Guess I need to add it to my "to do" list. Great stuff everyone!
Posted by Roger Rouch on January 6, 2012 at 12:06 PM
I haven't toured through NM for a long time, but want to say how impressed I am with everyone's work. It's very inspiring and makes me want to go back.
What? Nothing from White Sands yet? Well let's get it started. Posting this from work so the image is pretty low res. I'll edit with a higher res file when I get home.

Here is a Bisti image from a couple years ago with Rich V. and Scott B.

Here's one from Bandelier National Monument. This is from the top of the Upper Falls looking down towards the Rio Grande. The trail used to go all the way to the river but the flash floods after the fires this summer took out the trail. They say it will not be rebuilt and there is no place to build a new trail. I think they just need to think outside the box!! The flash floods also scoured out this canyon. Many of the trees you see are no longer there.
Phil's having so much fun, I've gotta keep at it too. I like northern NM as much as the next guy, but my real love is for the southwestern part of the state. Wish it were closer! This is the view south from Hillsboro Peak in the Black Range at sunrise.
And here's some subject matter we haven't seen yet in this thread: we have snow and big mountains down here too!
Posted by Phillip Noll on January 8, 2012 at 8:31 PM
Phil's having so much fun
Damn straight! Hey, how often does your state turn 100?? I want to show it off. And there is so much to show!!
my real love is for the southwestern part of the state
I love the Black Range! Haven't been there in years!
OK, there are some parts of NM that are under-represented here so I am challenging you all to post your photos of:
The Catwalk, El Morrow, El Malpais, The VLA, Mogollon, The Gila, Capulin, Sierra Blanca, Salinas Pueblo Missions,
Pecos, Truchas Peaks, Red River, Costilla, Sandia Mtn., Gila Cliff Dwellings, Cimarron, Elephant Butte, The Organ Mountains, Taos Gorge, Acoma, Shiprock, the eastern plains, and on, and on..........
Bill, I know what you mean! :-) I had to wipe the back of my jacket.

Some excellent work on this month's theme everyone. Just shows what a wide variety of photo opportunities exist in New Mexico. Here is one I took just 8-9 miles inside the border from Colorado, and it shows you don't have to go far into New Mexico to find that great light.
Posted by Bill Bean on January 19, 2012 at 1:26 PM
To quote a well known source, "Oh Mommy!" Some amazing work here. I don't envy the mods for the chore of having to determine the pick of this litter.

Great work by everyone! It's great to see the diversity of the New Mexico landscape.
My first dedicated photo trip to New Mexico was in 2008 to the Bisti Wilderness. I only got a few hours of shooting between the drive and monsoons, but it was productive and has taken me back several times.
Here is Shiprock the morning after a big monsoon. The air was pristine.
Posted by Kalin Wilson on January 22, 2012 at 2:06 PM
Bisti is a favorite of mine. Its great to wander for hours finding new stuff around every bend. These formations are some of the easiest to access and most photographed, but I like this perspective.

Yes, it will be a very difficult choice to make! But.....that just goes to show that the members of RMNP are some of the best landscape, wildlife, and travel photographers that are out there!

Many nice images showing the great offerings of NM. All I have are are old 3x5 print snapshots, so viewing these posted here is enjoyable.

That's actually "Unnamed" peak. Wheeler is out of view to the left. I'm still getting my computers setup after the move but will post a pic of Wheeler taken from just above Williams Lake.

What an awesome thread! Great showcase of both this forum's talent and of my home state's landscapes (though I will emphasize that there are plenty of locations missing). Here's a last entry from me that I just managed to process: December moonrise (the night before the eclipse) in one of my favorite areas, the Rio Puerco Valley. Decent sized version here. A different angle on this scene happened to show up on our very nice state centennial stamp.

Wow - this has got to be one of the best-represented monthly themes in a long time. I am glad I don't have to pick one photo from these!
Here's one from St. Francis church in Ranchos de Taos, taken on Kodak High-Speed Infrared film.

And here's one taken late one overcast evening at White Sands, as the dunes took on the warm tones of the sunset above.
