Off to South Africa we will visit Cape Town [camps bay] Paternoster on the Western Cape the Winelands [Overberg}and down the garden route, any tips please!
Also i would like to get a decent lightwieght travel tripod once again any advice would be much appreciated.
When I was in Cape Town I visited Rondevlei Nature Reserve (http://www.rondevlei.co.za/frames.htm). It is a wetland reserve which as hides and then 3 (I think) towers which you can see/photograph from. There are plenty of birds there. When I was there in October a couple of years ago, there were loads of egrets and herons, Ibises, Pelicans and also KFs, Swamp Hens, and then other small birds. The towers are good for flight shots, but are too high up to shoot anything on the ground from.
Kirstenbosch Gardens (http://www.sanbi.org/gardens/kirstenbosch) is also in Cape Town. That can be good for the smaller birds, as well as Hadeda Ibises. Plenty of Sunbirds and other passerine, although I imagine it may get quite busy.
I went to Table Mountain as well where there were lizards, and other sunbirds and small birds, as well as a couple of Kestrels.
You could search all of these locations in flickr and see what images people have taken there.
Hope that helps
Oscar

Was in Capetown in Aug 2006 and you will love it. It was not really a nature trip for me but did go to Boulder beach for the penguins and took a great whale watch trip from Mossel Bay. I used a fantastic lady called Julie Clarke who sorted everything for me and took us around in comfort and safety www.capesplendour.co.za
I use the Manfrotto 055 for travelling or if things are very tight the Manfrotto 715SHB

In the botanical gardens at Stellenbosch it was easy to find Cape dwarf chameleon. I had some trouble myself, but they seemed to take the local kids about 10 seconds to find. Don't miss Boulder beach, and the sea aquarium in Cape Town is not to be missed. Look out for seals in the harbours and marinas nearby.
