Hey all you daring Lightroom fans, Adobe labs has made LR4 Beta available to the public for download. You can get it here. No prior ownership of any LR version is needed, this beta is for anyone. On March 12th it stops working, FYI. This version gets interesting because it adds something that was missing in prior versions for some odd reason, and that's Soft Proofing. If you print on your own (and even if you send your print work out), soft-proofing is pretty much mandatory, so this is a welcome upgrade!

I downloaded the beta and when I went to use the develop module it was the same one from LR3 Not the new version. Waiting for a reply

Lots of welcome new features. I looking forward to the changes in the tonal adjustment sliders.
And, with the new Book Module, I might even create my first Blurb book - a recurring New Years resolution.

Here's a comprehensive summary that I found most helpful:

I have an upcoming aerial photography trip. Normally I wouldn't have much interest in the new Map Module, but syncing aerial photos with a GPS track and displaying them on a Google Map will be a fun feature.

I have found Betas not worth the hassels.
Is March 12 the estimated release date?

Lightroom 4 Beta looks awesome. It introduces a lot of new features.

Book Creation Module: create and design books via this new module. You can output the final layout in PDF form or use a direct link to Blurb. Blurb is the popular self publishing service.

GeoTagging of Images combined with Google Earth

Image Editing Tools have been updated.

Highlight and shadow recovery brings out all the detail that your camera captures in dark shadows and bright highlights.

Location-based organization lets you find and group images by location, assign locations to images, and display data from GPS-enabled cameras.

White balance brush to refine and adjust white balance in specific areas of your images.

Additional local editing controls let you adjust noise reduction and remove moiré in targeted areas of your images.

Extended video support for organizing, viewing, and making adjustments and edits to video clips.

Easy video publishing lets you edit and share video clips on Facebook and Flickr®.

Soft proofing to preview how an image will look when printed with color-managed printers.

Email directly from Lightroom using the email account of your choice
Based on previous Beta’s the changes will probably will not represent the complete feature list of the final version. As with any beta software there is a increase risk of bugs and performance issues.

I can wait to get my hands on this.

Myer, I have read if you open an existing image that was processed with LR3, then LR4 will use the old 2010 Process and display only the LR3 options in the Develop Module. Change to Process Version 2012, and you should see the new options.

Bill is correct. You will find this in the right side panel near the bottom where you select which develop profile to use. It is in the same place where you find the D2x profiles, Adobe profiles, etc.
