Having found some owls in the UK, the day before leaving, that would perform I took every chance to shoot them.

Did struggle with the 7D though, the only focus mode that would work weel was single point....I guess it is all the grass that confuses the other modes?

700mm, f6.3, 7D, ISo800

I found exactly the same thing with autofocus, Neil. The only other thing that worked well was manual, otherwise the camera would focus on everything but the bird. Incidentally, I take it you were actually using 700mm, 70mm might have been a bit close for comfort!

Corrected David thanks. Yes at 700mm x1.6 crop focussing was the hardest part. I settled with at least half of the shots being OOF!

This is superb! Love the sharp facial details and blurring of wings.

Cracking photo Neil :toast: . There are lots of custom functions on the 7D that can help with birds in flight. There's nothing wrong with the focus system on the 7D IMHO.

Thanks guys. Believe me Paul I have tried most 7D AF functions but it does not handle grass and trees in the BG very well, hence my using a single AF point in the end. On a blue sky it works well ;)

Can't comment on 7D AF, but this is super shot with a great eye and a bit different to many of the 'flying along' shots. :toast:
