Producing a Calendar

I received a Jagdkalender (hunting calander)from a German friend and like it so much I'd like to do a one for our rod and gun club. It would, however, focus on skeet shooting, not hunting.

The calendar is 8 1/4 x 11 3/4" with wire binder and clear front protective cover. In researching materials, I came across a comment saying it was more cost effective to purchase a kit ($9 plus) rather than produce one myself. He said cost of paper, ink, wire binders, etc. was too high to make a profit. I estimate, if I produced, it would sell for $10 - $12. I'd like to hear from those who've produced and sold calendars and their experiences and recommendations. Thank you.

If you're talking any kind of volume, you're also talking a whale of a lot of labor in assembling along with the time of production. We used to put together out own, but now go through our pro print lab. Lots of services offer calendar printing, and results are usually excellent. I'd forecast how many you think you can sell, then compare your estimated costs with those from a service. I think you'll be surprised how "cheap" they are in comparison, even if you're only paying yourself $1 and hour for your time and making no contribution to your utility bill.

I did a 2012 avian calendar, and was very surprised at inexpensively they could be produced in good quality. Unless it is a very small run, the labor in doing it yourself, not mention the cost of binding equipment, is pretty fierce. I agree with Hank: hire someone.

Hi, Spencer - Several good past threads here about calendars - do a search with the search engine near the top right here to pull them up.

I have done some calendars and I would strongly recommend hiring someone. You can occasionally find a deal for $5 per calendar for a run of 100. Usually you should expect to pay $7-$8 for 100 depending on your options. If its a local club, you might even push your fee for $12-$14.99. People will pay more for local shots. However, the publicity that you generate for yourself is invaluable, so don't sharge too much. Good luck!

I had some calendars made at Modern Postcard. They'll do quantities as low as 25 (although you'll get a better price on them if you order more) and the quality is outstanding. I've seen too many with really poor quality printing of the photos but the MP calendars are top notch. I'm ordering 200 of them in June to sell for the 2013 year and the cost is around $6/each.
