Hi....
I would like to know if I can use both the TC togeather on Canon EF500mm f/4 lens to get a real good closeup of the moon. Togeather it will give me a focal length of 1400mm. What will be the min f stop? Will I get good sharpness? Please advice.
Regards
Hussain

Hi Hussain,

As far as I know it is possible. But you will lose your autofocus function. So you have to focus manually. Also your image quality will degrade. But it works and wil give you a 1400mm lens. If I'm correct your min. aperture will be F11.

Have you ever been in Holland? I asked this because the second picture in the header of your website looks very Dutch and familiar to me. Or am I wrong?? :)

Hi, Hussain - Sure, it's "possible" - but I don't think you would be happy.
You'll need to manually focus, and the image will not be sharp. In my experience, the 500 mm + the TC 2.0 alone is not realiable re sharpness. The 500 + 1.7 is a better bet.
Further, the slow SS with these 2 will not give a sharp moon image - don't forget, the moon is always moving.
Disclaimer: I shoot Nikon, but my friends with Canons have confirmed this is about the same.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.
Tom, I had been to Amsterdam on a holiday and I toot that picture. It is a panorama for 3 pictures stitched togeather..
A few weeks back I did take a picture of the moon with just the EF500mm lens without the TC and the picture was quite sharp. I have seen a picture of Saturn taken by a gentleman using two TC with his EF500mm which I wanted to try along with a picture of moon.

Anyway thanks for the feedback and I will try for the Saturn and if I find it acceptable I will post it ....

Everybody's right - risk vs reward is high but I would disagree that it's not worth a try. I have done it and gotten not just good but very good results. Remember this also, if you're using your 500 on a Canon aps-c sensor body, you already have a "built in" teleconverter effect due to the 1.6 crop factor and your lens is 800 with NO additional teleconverter. Put on the 1.4 by itself(which gives killer results routinely), and now you have 1120. By the way, if you don't believe me, arguably the worlds best bird photographer and someone making tons of money doing it, Arthur Morris, has also successfully used Canon 500 with stacked teleconverters. You could probably write him through his website/blog "Birds As Art". JR
