If anyone is interested in meeting up at the Bear Lake Trailhead tomorrow at 6:00am for a hike to Dream Lake, let me know or just show up! Sunrise is about 7:20. I want to be there about a half hour before sunrise which is about 7:20. Should be windy, very cold and clear, basically crappy conditions to shoot Hallet. A nice hike before the Bronco game seems the perfect day...

This is basically a recon trip to check out the "Dream Ice," and see if it's coming along for Ice Photography. If all is well, I may check out Emerald Lake too. Again, it will be windy. There is one positive with wind at Dream, just one....you won't be digging to get to the ice!!

Tempting, but I've been there in the wind.
Looking forward to your ice report.

Dream Lake conditions are what I expected. Windy, no clouds and cold. Mountain photography was uninspiring due to zero clouds and zero snow in the trees to keep shadows interesting. I hiked up to Emerald Lake as well; nothing spectacular there. The Ice at Emerald is basically washed out in white tones from the lingering snow and compacted white bubbles.

Ice at Dream was good enough for me. Overall there wasn't much to play with however there where a few patches of shootable ice on the left shore, toward the far end, in the rocks. I didn't see anything at the east side of the lake worth shooting.

I did find one small area behind a huge boulder that really made my day. It was super polished ripple ice, with minimal bubbles. The ice had some nice depth providing a rich, black background with contrasty shadows.

I'll post later.
