The Sacramento Wildlife Refuge Complex is one of Northern California's top winter birding sites. Today one of the attractions was the rare Falcated Duck at the Colusa Refuge. He was there when we arrived around 9:30 and was still there around noon when we left (along with many more birders) after driving the loop. We had great views through scopes but didn’t get any good photos of Falcated Duck. The Duck is very rare in the U.S. and is normally a bird of Asia. The bird tends to hang around viewing area so he is easy to see. Usually you need a long lens to get a good photo, but he has been known to come in close.
Highlights at the Sacramento refuge were the thousands of Snow and Ross’s Geese (mainly at the western side of refuge near the second stopping area), a rare dark morph (“blue goose”). Ross’s Goose, and a third year Bald Eagle. There were many water birds at both refuges.
