Other Way Dunes
I've got tons of shots of the N Sangres at sunset from the high dunes, but not much of the Blanca group, so yesterday i went deep and hiked a couple miles into the northern dunes so that i could get some shots of the southern range with dunes in the foreground. Once again, i was the only one in the park, and since a half inch of snow fell overnight, i could tell that i was probably the only visitor all day. I love January in the dunes! Here's the Blanca group etc from a high point in the N central dunes.

Love the series. I really like the abstract feel of #3. The black and gold with the hint of snow is just great. I really like #7 as well, but would have liked to see it vertical as well. Can't wait to make it here this year.

Great set! What was the temp down there?
Posted by Stan Rose on January 18, 2012 at 4:22 PM
It was in the 20s, felt a lot colder though until the wind finally came down after sunset.

Great shooting as usual Stan; I really like no.3 for the abstract view and light. As an old time B&W shooter, I love no.4 Thanks for sharing.

Damn! Seeing these means I am going to have to march into the dunes in Death Valley now. Nice stuff Stan!

Love the expanse of #1, the textures in #2. Is that C3PO out on the horizon of #5?

Not a bad one in the bunch, Stan. I especially like the warm red light in #1, 2 and 7. And the B&W is just as good. 7 is probably my favorite.

That's a bunch of really good photos of the Dunes! I've got to get back there again soon! I grew up in Monte Vista and strangely, rarely visited the Dunes growing up. It wasn't until my interest in landscape photography grew that I realized what an amazing place that park is! Thanks for sharing, Stan

# 3 Stan is a real winner!

Hi Stan, I like 1, 3 and 7 is may fav. I think #1 is a keeper but the WB seems a bit too warm. The horizon on the right has a rusty orange to it. The Dunes look nice with that warmer tone, however I bet you could cool it down a notch and the Dunes would still pop with that clean light you had. #3 is good too, but that lingering snow makes me wonder why I never saw images from you when it snowed in the Dunes. I love the ice edges to the dune apex in #7.

#5 is a shot that shows off how strong you are, and that nobody will ever keep up with you in the Dunes. You are the Dune Master...

Great set, Stan. 2 and 3 are my picks. I can't recall another shot of any dunes quite like #3.

Stan, I really like the redder sands of this series are complimented by the cloud colors.. 2&7 are my favorites here. Might also see a more vertical crop of 7 to bring focus on the leading ridge line. With #1, the disturbed sand on the left edge grabs me some. If I may be honest, I prefer 1, 2, 7 over your ESS shot where the big dune splits apart the sunlit peaks and cloud colors.

Great work, as usual Stan. #3 stands apart from the rest for me, the bits of snow add that extra bit of interest to the shadows that really helps the image.

Stan, these are all excellent, but my favorites are #2 (I like the detail in the foreground dunes) and #3. The abstract feeling in #3 is really intriguing and it's an image I can look at for a long time. Really well done.
