I recently purchased a Lowepro Trekker 400 to carry my 200-400 w/D300 attached. It just fits. Close enough that it won't fit with the 1.4x attached. That works for me because I use it without more than with.
That said, I will comment on the bag in general. I've owned and looked at many photo backpacks over the years. This is the first one I've seen that has all the functionallity needed for camera gear but also feels/wears like a real backpack. I've always been frustrated with the means of attachments for tripods on bags I've owned. The Trekker has a simple yet elegant means of doing so. Not only that it has three separate pockets to pick from or you can carry a monopod too. It is one of the best pieces of photo accessory gear that I've ever owned.

Andrew, It IS a little big, but it's not wasted space. That extra maybe 5 inches at the top (and there is a flap that folds over the lens end) held my card cases, a pack of extra batteries, and lunch! I even slipped the 18-200mm in there sometimes. I used it for the 200-400 and then the 500 as well. Lots of outside pockets.
It's very well-padded, and an easy-to-carry backpack case.
