I was earlier using a Conon EF500mm f/4.5 but now I have moved to Canon EF500mm f/4L IS USM which is much heavyer the the earlier one.I have been using a chinese made Gimbal head with BENRO tripod. With this new lens I find it is not taking the weight since after I lock it, it still moves a little putting the subject out of the centre.
I therefore feel that I should change both the gears. Which one would you guys recomend so that it is a one time expense and will last me for a long time. I am keen on bird photography more perticularly birds in flight. Please advice.
Really Right Stuff (RRS) has a full gimbal head that is first rate. You may need to change your tripod, too, and RRS can help you select the right one. This should satisfy your desire for a one-time purchase and give you rock solid support with ease of use in the field. There are lots of other gear combinations that would work, too, I am sure; and I hope other members will add suggestions. It's just that RRS set me up perfectly, and I've had the success I hoped for and no problems or regrets or need to add/change any gear since (2 years of flawless performance).

Other than RRS, the most common gimbal recommendation I've seen is for the Wimberley gimbal

I love my Gitzo tripod and Wimberley gimbal. It's rock solid.
