I'd like to create a web site to post my own images for others to look at.
Does anyone have suggestions regarding which software and which sites?
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Use spell check, definitely.

Howard, you should first decide how much effort you want to put into maintaining a website. That answer will determine which route you should go. Something like Zenfolio or Smugmug are great if you're looking for the low maintenance route. If you want to be more involved, then the sky is the limit. If you're a Lightroom user, and you'd like to be more involved with the customization of your site, I recommend The Turning Gate. I'm in the midst of building my site, and am really impressed with TTG. There are a million other options. Good luck.
I'll second Paul's recommendation for TTG if you are at all familiar with working html code.
It can be as simple or as complex as you like and you can update you galleries without too much hassle. For the price I think it is hard to beat.
@ Todd - you beat me to it.

Todd, are you inplying I hace a spelking problem?
Paul and Aleksei, I don't use Lightroom, so that eliminates that option.

Howard, Paul is spot on saying that it depends on how much work, and to a lesser degree, how much expense you are willing to undertake. My first website was written for me by a pal who is a web geek. It was all written in HTML and I apparently have a mental block against HTML cause I studied and read a lot but was still marginal at best on updates. When my buddy got too busy with life to help with updates I was faced with either remaining stagnant or looking for something else. I looked at a lot of different stuff and settled on a company called Photium.com. It is mostly flash technology so making changes and adding images is literally as simple as drag and drop which is perfect for me since the main purpose is to provide a viewinig platform for my images.
It does have limitations as far as how much it can be customized but for my purposes the ease of use far outweighs the disadvantages of limited functionality. It's pretty inexpensive too so it fits my current needs perfectly. Check them out.
I am using the Photocrati template for my worpress site. It gives you a lot of possibilities in regards to look and has e-commerce built in. It's pretty easy to use. Photocrati people are great with support, too. The wordpress site needs to be hosted by someone else than worpress (I keep forgetting which one .org and com is)

Howard,,,I'm using Zenfolio. I was up and running in a day. They have a trial period where you can build your site and then if you like it just sign up.

I'm happy with smugmug for my http://photokinesis.info galllery. Drag-and-drop to load images, print fulfillment, and the pro-upgrade allows you to charge for your photos. Lightroom has an export to smugmug option, but I've only used the drag method. You can put as much or as little effort as you like into re-theming. I do html, css and some other acronyms, but I've been happy with smugmug's default theme.
What impressed me specifically about smugmug was how amaziningly easy it was to set up. Very well-designed user interface.
I have one caveat: Smugmug works from your jpgs for their printing services. As you may know, jpeg format has a restricted gamut that is great for web delivery and sufficient for decent prints. If you want really great printing in expanded color gamuts, you may want to do your own printing and mailing.
I'm sure that other gallery services have similar functionality to smugmug.

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions. I'm going to check them out and hopefully make a choice.
