So after MUCH thought, I decided to make the switch BACK to nikon.
The reason being is that I believe that canon has not kept up in the noise race for there crop sensor cameras. These pics are all shot at ISO 1000 and with a sigma 50-500 at f6.3 where it is supposed to be the softest. I am very Impressed with the image quality from this camera, and no it is not the d7000 it is with a d5100.

Last one. None of these images would have been possible with either my canon 50d or my nikon d200, even at ISO 1000 i was getting shutter speeds of 1/50th to 1/60th of a sec.
how much crop on these? 500mm? Also, I'm wondering whether the cameras have different default settings for in-camera noise reduction. BTW, I'm not questioning your comparison. I have a Canon 7d that I believe has unacceptable noise at ISO 400. Nonetheless, I'm wondering whether settings can account for the Nikon's lack of noise.

Marylynne, these are shot in raw and I ran some noise reduction, but in MY opinion the nikon file has far less noise to begin with and I am seeing that the nikon meter is much more accurate.
