I'm heading to Jackson Hole and YNP first week in March and it's a once in a lifetime winter visit from the UK.

I'd really appreciate any advice of lens selection for the trip Nature Landscapes all of great interest. I just don't want to get it wrong through lack of local knowledge so please any pointers?

Thank you.

It kind of depends on what you like to shoot, and wouldn't be any different for locations where you live. If you shoot landscapes, get a good wide-angle zoom. If you shoot wildlife, get a long, fast telephoto lens. These choices are irrelevant of the location you happen to be going to visit.

I have a 24-105, a 70-200, a 1.4X teleconverter, a 17mm and a 100-400. If I were to take a trip where I had to pare down my gear, I'd be very happy with the first three on the list. If I knew I wanted to shoot wildlife, I'd want something longer than 200.

How far do you have to pare down?

At a minimum, I would try to cover the 24-200mm range. For me that would be a 24-105 and 70-200 f/4.
With the aboundant wildlife opportunities, I would want to bring along a 400mm f5.6 + 1.4xTC. Relatively small and light.
Of course a 100-400mm zoom could replace the 70-200mm.

Todd & Bill

Thank you that gives me a few options to work with. You can't beat the true value of local knowledge.

Anyone coming over the pond, if I can help just ask in the future.

I would also suggest the lens suggestions above especially for scenic shooting. But if your going to shoot wildlife I would suggest a large prime lens. You can probably rent one and make arrangements to pick it up if you know of a place around Jackson or Yellowstone that would receive it for you (probably where you will be lodging) There are several good lens rental places here in the states. The reason I suggest this is that you'll be arriving during the wolf breeding season. There should be a lot of wolf activity especially in the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone. I'm sure that you already know most of the park roads are still shut down in both parks. (YNP & GTNP). But the road going through the Lamar Valley is open to vehicle traffic. For the latest Yellowstone activity google the YNET FORUM and you'll read first hand what's going on. Have a great trip.
