Hello everyone -
Let's see your images from White Sands! And of course, location tips are always appreciated
Mark Ferguson and I toured New Mexico this past January... Bosque del Apache, Valley of Fires, White Sands, Chaco Canyon... before meeting up with CAZ in Moab. It was a great trip!
In the 24 hours we were at White Sands I captured nearly 1000 images. I am still sifting through them; it's quite a chore.
And I am still finding sand in my camera bag!
Here's one I like because of its textural quality. This really captures the essence of being "on the ground" in the dunes.
I will put up a few more on this thread as I make selections. I'm looking forward to seeing your photos!

Nice shot, Nat! I really like the different textures - do you know what kind of tracks those are? I've not been to WS yet, but am moving it up the list!

James-
Sorry but I have no idea what kind of tracks those are. Now that you mention it, I don't recall seeing any birds walking on the dunes while we were there. But these same tracks were everywhere.
The checklist of birds found around the dunes is staggering.
Nice lines and textures, Nat. The criss-cross of the ripples and shadows is cool!
I could have a field day with this thread. White Sands was my first trip to any kind of dune field and I had a blast. We camped in the dunes during full moon which was incredible. Not many people, and the wind was steady enough that we never had a problem with footprints. I spent a lot of time trying to make images that captured the magnitude of the dunes. As you can tell by this one, I wasn't much for subtlety back then - just let that dune cut right through the meat of the frame!
I wasn't keeping track of location, so all I can say is that this is in about a mile, near campsite #4 I think.

This one was taken almost at the end of the drive, just a few hundred feet off the road.

Rick - I love your shot, too. Very graphic. The moonlight at the dunes really creates some unworldly effects.
I had a difficult time making compositions that showed the magnitude of the dunes, and the spatial relationships between them. I had previsualized what I wanted and didn't quite find it (although we were only there a sunset and a sunrise).
This is a shot of moonset, during civil twilight, about 10 minutes before sunrise. You can see the glow of the sun behind the camera starting to illuminate the sand.
There are washes at the bases of many of the dunes, and in these washes a variety of textures and patterns. Some of them were so regular they looked man-made.
All in all, one of my favorite places that I've been to photograph!
Mark Ferguson and I are putting together a workshop in New Mexico next January, to include Bosque del Apache, the VLA, Valley of Fires, and White Sands. We'd love to have some CNPers join us!
Another nice one, Nat! When we were there, the washes were filled with blooming flowers - desert verbena, I think. Gorgeous.
I'll keep an eye out for your workshop. I'd love to go back, especially with the LF. In fact, when I got my LF, that was the first place my wife wanted to revisit. With the possible exception of Death Valley, I don't think any place has affected us both as much as White Sands did.
Here's one of my favorite intimate shots from there. I caught this just as the dune came into the shadow of another near sunset, but the flowers were sticking up just enough to still be catching the light. The purple in the sand is from the reflected sky, warmed by E100 SW which created some pretty extreme results out there. Not sure I would choose that film again, but I liked what it did here.
edit: crummy scan; I need to redo it, or better yet have Richie drum scan it...
