Hi all,

Sorry that I have been absent for some time. I have just seen Johns post about the forum and thought it best to update you with a picture.

I am currently working on a "Small Birds in Flight" project. Why I started this is winter is a mystery to me as I need an exceptional amount of light to make this kind of image presentable.

The light at the beginning of February was good, when this image was taken. Sadly for the rest of the month it has been back to dull, grey and overcast. I find I need at least 1/2000th ss to do them justice so, unless I use flash, this is only possible on bright sunny days.

More images are appearing on my web and blog for those interested.

Canon 1DMK4
200mm
f7.1
1/3200
ISO800

C&C welcome.

Cheers

Austin

Great capture! A really unusual view, love the outstretched feathers and the pose. The white is well handled given the strong light. My only thought is the strong shadow under the wing, but I'm not sure what you could do here - as you say you need the bright light to get a fast enough speed. Maybe install a reflector?!

Great detail and you have obviously put a lot of thought into the background as well. Excellent capture.

Top shot Austin and love the BG. Agree with dawn on the shadow. Could you fire a flash from below or fire one at a reflector below?

Thanks all for your comments and feedback. Much appreciated.

@Dawn, I like the idea of a reflector, I will give that a try. I did some backlit with a reflector but didn't try it this way around.
@John, I don't think you have commented on this image before ?!?! If you did I didn't see the comment.
@Bob, I have done this kind of picture before using flash, so I am wanting to produce some without flash to see what is achievable. I like the reflector idea.

Cheers

I much prefer this to your previous flash shots Austin, it all works perfectly.

I think it is nice image with a high-level of skill needed. These shots are NOT easy but i find the wings obscure too much of a rather colourful bird making it look a bit dull......but still excellent.

This is superb Austin. As Dawn says a reflector could work well, but I would be very pleased with this! :toast: :toast:
