He all.
I have a problem. When I assign PS as the default program for opening image files, I can't find PS in the subsequent dialogue box or with the search tool. How do force it to show PS?

When I set a program as the default for a file or file type then I don't have to find the program - it opens whenever I click on the file.
If I right-click on the icon for a file I can open it with the default, or select "open with" to see a list of all the other applications that can open that file.
Of course, that's on a Mac running OS X. If you are asking about Windows or some other OS you might want to mention that in your question.
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to a folder that contains a file of the type you want to open. Right click a file. From the context menu choose "Open with...". In the list select, "Choose Default Program". A dialog box will pop up showing programs that typically open the file type. Select the program of your choice, and be sure the check box "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is checked. Click OK, and you're done.
If the program you want to use is not in the list in the "Open with" dialog, you can browse for its executable and then set it is as default as above.
Barry, it looks like I misunderstood your question. You can try browsing to PS from the Open with dialog box. If you're using the 64-bit version, you can see if its location is like mine...

--P
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 Bit)\Photoshop.exe.
If your PS is 32-bit, it should be located at...
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Photoshop.exe
Once you've browsed to the executable (Photoshop.exe), you be able to set it is default as in my previous post.
