Agora Gallery in New York is showing some interest
in representing me. Have any of you had any experience
with them? If so, what has it been like?
Thank you.

Cordially,

Robert Dayton

Do a web search - some not-very-complimentary things being said. Be sure to read the fine print in any proposed agreement.

I was approached by them, sometime ago and they ask for huge sum to represent, may be something like US$5000 or so. They are thinking about making some money from you and not other way round.

Hello,
They have been contacting me and we have been playing e-mail tag for about 3 weeks now which has been good because since that time I went on Artmine.com and emailed 5 photographers to see what there experience has been. They said it is a very professional gallery but no one is selling any work. I have decided not to join and I will concentrate around my area.

From what I've read it is a "pay to play" venue. Basically you are renting a piece of wall to hang your work in NYC. If you are looking for the prestige of a NYC show without having to crack the gallery scene (read "How to Get Hung" by Molly Barnes for an intro into how that works) and you have the $$$$ to throw at it, then maybe it's for you. I don't have the $$$$ to pay a vanity gallery and the process Molly described in her book made me want to vomit.

I was contacted by Agora a couple of years ago. After reading the fine print, I decided to forego it. It is a 'pay-to-play' deal with little or no return. There are better (read less expensive) ways to market your work. Robert.

Thanks for the helpful responses. I'm going to avoid Agora.

Robert, I know I started a thread about them nearly two years ago on here. I keep getting stuff from them. There have been subsequent threads on here as well, so if you did a quick search you'll find a lot of similar responses--though some were positive if I recall in my thread. It's a vanity gallery on steroids.
