B&H Photo just emailed the announcement about 10 minutes ago. Here are the specs, FINALLY, no guessing anymore. I'll read it through after I post this, but it appears that the latest rumors were dead on: 22.3mp, all of the AF features predicted, dual CF and SD slots and built-in HDR and Multiple exposures, all for a bargain price of $3,499. If you DO want to pre-order it, B&H is taking preorders here.
And if you had any desire to read Canon's official release, Canon Europe has it posted here (USA site didn't have it posted yet). And if you're really REALLY interested, Planet5D's owner posted a short vid where you can hear the 5D3 rip out 6fps here. That was not a typo, yes, there are already videos posted so you can hear the 5D3 fire off. Seriously.
I will say this: it's definitely a solid 5D2 upgrade with lots of improvements for shooters needing FAST focus and exposure. Landscape shooting on a tripod, I see no real improvement. Built-in HDR? Seriously? With no control in Post? That's equivalent to printing direct from the camera... you CAN, but why? Maybe in a few specific situations it's a good thing.
Here's a good comparison chart between the 5D2, 5D3 and new Nikon D800. All have their strengths (the 5D2's new strength is being nearly a grand cheaper, lol).
OK, I'm done, enough gear talk. You guys and gals have at it. G'nite!
I guess for all the landscape photographers that already own a Mark II this is a negligible update. I can't even imagine where this one fits in. Neither landscape nor sports photographers will find this camera as their top choice. And on top Canon brings out a dedicated camera for filming too. I have no clue about their strategies. Maybe they just thoughts that the 5D Mark II was too cheap and they needed to bump some unnecessary stuff into the camera to justify a higher price.
Looking at the Canon press release it seems that the Mk3 is supposed to be a generalist camera. Good at everything, master of nothing. So if you're a serious amateur who likes to a walk-around the city camera, a bit of portrait photography and a bit of landscape, this is the camera for you. Or if you're a pro on a tight budget. And, in my opinion, it fits those roles very well.
