Thanks to the generosity of CAZ, Kurt Rinne and I got to go into The Wave on the 4th of March. Wow!I feel like I barely scratched the surface of what there is to see and explore around there.

We headed out of Denver Thursday afternoon through snow on the western slope and snow in Moab/Canyonlands Friday morning. Friday and Saturday nights we spent at White Pocket (another Wow!). It was a welcome first trip of the year to some locations I hadn't been to before.

Have I mentioned that I LOVE my Nikon 14-24/2.8? This lens was made for this area. I think I took it off the camera only a handful of times in two days of shooting. The clarity and crispness was evident in live view, and really came through when reviewing the shoot.

This is one of my favorites from The Wave. Leading lines is a cliche here, but so much fun.
Additional images are on my site

The White Pocket shots are next.

They're all great, but I really like #7 on your site. Nice, fresh take. And you handled the high contrast environment extremely well.

Thanks, Todd. It's fun what a super wide does in tight spaces. I was also surprised that I didn't need to blend any shots. I owe kudos to Tony Kuyper for his masks and actions!

I like Woosh and River of Rock. What great location for using the 14-24.

Nice stuff Kalin! I'm with Todd that Sweep of the Wave stands out as a pretty unusual Wave shot.

I really like the last three images at your site. 'Development' is spot on, too.
Did you have much company there?
Lookin' forward to seeing your series form the White Pocket.

Hi Kalin, man you just go wrong at the Wave and your series has me drooling for a future visit. Glad your enjoying that 14-24, such a special lens. Bring on White Pocket!

Thanks guys. John, there was about 10-12 other people but pretty spread out. I didn't notice any other internet lottery permits, mostly walk-ins.

1, 2, and 7 are my favorites in that order. You have a great eye and have managed to get a different viewpoint I haven't seen before ( #7). How are you liking dealing with the mechanics of the 14-24 on the Canon body? Which adapter are you using? Are you using live-view for focusing?
Posted by Kalin Wilson on March 15, 2012 at 1:23 AM
Thanks Don. I'm getting used to using the Nikon lens. I can't remember the adapter name off hand. The one from the English guy that is always (or was) on back order. It has a slider on the outside of the adapter to adjust the aperture.
I use live view exclusively with this lens. The f2.8 is nice when I have to focus through the viewfinder, but 10x live view with a Hoodman Loupe is wonderful. Even at 24mm, I can focus on a near foreground element and the rest of the scene falls into focus - gotta love the super-wide.
There is nothing automatic with this lens, so I shoot on manual, close the aperture to f8-f11, and adjust the exposure speed until the exposure indicator is 1/3 to 2/3 stops under the +0 exposure.
The only problem I have is lately when the camera is in portrait orientation, sometimes live view won't stay on, the shutter immediately closes. This shoot I realized that the weight of the lens in that orientation causes the electrical contacts to break contact or something, causing problems. It's intermittent, and may be the adapter getting old/worn.
Still I'm usually pretty happy with the results if gives.

Great set, even with all that blue sky. "Sweep of the Wave", is also my favorite. Hope to see it hanging in the gallery.

Great set Kalin. The Wave is truly a wonderful location, and your shots make the most of it!

Great color and I really like your perspective.
