In a few weeks time I'm heading south and have either Prime Hook or Blackwater on the itinerary for some bird photography on the way.

Does anyone have any recommendations about shooting in either refuge?

Thanks!

Nick,

I visited Blackwater in September and will go again soon. This time I'll take a canoe with electric motor so I can get closer to birds along the shoreline. The Visitor's Center will provide you with a map showing canoe trails if you decide to take one with you.

I saw one Bald Eagle, numerous Canada Geese, ducks, and several Blue Heron. But there are only a few places to stop in the refuge (near Visitor's Center) where one can get near birds. Of course the land is flat which makes it more difficult to get a variety of shots. I drove deeper into the refuge and came across a small Sika deer near the road. He cooperated long enough to get photos. This is a good time of year to go since birds are migrating and stop to feed. I was at Asseteague Island in late February and saw no Snowy Egrets but they should be in the area soon, if not already.

Best of luck and have a pleasant trip,
Spencer
