Are you viewing it on an Ipad? If so, the operating system adds that if the image is larger than it thinks it should be (something around 200K). I've seen no fix for it. I'm on the first generation of the Ipad.

I'll assume you are viewing from an iPhone or other device running iOS. NPN page layout is not compatible with iOS and has been discussed here a few times already. I think the same problem occurs when using Safari as your web browser with OS X 10.6 or 10.7.
For the small 720 pixel images hosted by NPN the image itself is presented as the background in a table with a transparent gif as the cell contents as a crude defense against viewers stealing the small image. iOS does not like this (I assume the issue is the transparent gif and not the html for the table) and displays the gif as a ? on a blue square.
If the image is hosted somewhere and linked to NPN then the blue ? does not appear (there's no transparent gif overlay). The larger 1200 pixel optional images shown on NPN do not have a transparent gif applied to them so they also get displayed on an iOS device without a blue ?
I just upgraded my iPad (first version) to the latest operating system 5.01 & the blue box with the "?" went away on the 720 pixel version of the photos in this site.
No, I'm not about to change browsers for this issue. I remember a few years ago when the same thing happened. There was a fix, but I can't remember what it was.
Everything was fine with the last few versions of Safari until I went to Lion. And it's only happening on NPN images, so I'm looking for NPN to make the correction to work better on Safari. Since the image itself is properly loading, it must be the transparent gif overlay that is not being loaded.

Little blue ? box is still there on every image I see on the NPN forums.
Wick: I just browsed the Avian Gallery from my iPhone and the blue ? is gone there as well. 3GS running 5.1 (9B176).
