Yesterday I just got my Nikon 600mm Ed-If AIS lens from Ebay. Loosing out on a TC-14B teleconverter bid, I used by TC-14A (early version serial 186K) converter which is not recommended for lenses this long. I rarely use it on my 300mm as it seems to dull the image plus it cuts out a stop. Tonight in a brief pause from a week long rain storm I took this photo at approx. 75% of full screen with my Nikon D300s, ISO 1250, F8. For the heck of it I attached the TC-14A teleconverter and snapped a few sharp shots. I was surprised at the great quality (not meaning that others necessary agree).
Why should this inappropriate teleconverter work so much better on the 600mm than on my 300mm F4.5 Ed-If AIS lens?
There is nothing wrong with the TC-14A.
Only on some camera's there may be an issue noone knows for sure??
Nikon only advertise that it is not recommended to cover themselves legally if a customer is not satisfied.
All the manufacturers do this
It is not inappropriate at all.
Enjoy your new Glass
BTW this is a great shot with wonderful feather detail
