Just ordered some new gear. A new carbon fiber tripod and ballhead, universal L bracket and a couple of plates. Oh, also picked up a new lens finally! Bought myself a Nikon 24-70 2.8. That thing is a masterpiece in build quality compared to my 18-70 DX lens. What a beast of a lens. I hope to get out in the snow to give a try this weekend. It will have to mount to the D200 for a little while, but the D800 will be coming soon!

Sweet! You should be having lots of fun with that new gear!! I know that birthday feeling. I'm turning 50 this year so I splurged as well bought a Canon 70-200 F/2.8II and an 65mm MP-E which should be fun learning how to use.

Chris probably can't hear us since he's likely in Yosemite shooting the best snow conditions of the year!

You are/were right, Preston. I just got back, and it was a heavy snow. Left Harley and Jason at Tunnel View. It dumped about foot on top of my car last night. It was snowing below Groveland this afternoon on the drive home!

I put the new lens through it's initiation shoot, with a new Kata raincover of course. Is it just me, or do things look brighter through the viewfinder with a 2.8 aperture lens?

Thanks Guys,
Chris

Chris, good to hear the trip went well. With regard to the lens, I suspect if you had the f 3.5 prior there might be a slightly brighter look through the f 2.8 it being referred to as faster glass or lens if you will. At least conventional lenses work that way. Hope to see the shots with that new 2.8 soon....

you've certainly got mileage out of that D200 - look forward to D800 trickery ...

Whoa! Great list of new toys. The 24-70/2.8 will knock you're sox off! I bought mine last year and have been enamored with it. Have fun, and do let us see the results!

Happy Birthday Old Man ! What a great list of toys! You will really like the 24-70. I shoot with the older 28-70 and you're right, it's a beast! Things will definitely look brighter through the viewfinder with a 2.8 versus a 4-5.6 lens. Have fun - I see you already have!
