I am enormously disappointed that this photo of a sea gull with a trout in its mouth after diving like an Osprey was too far away to achieve any level of quality. I am posting this because the behavior was so interesting to me. The gull dove into the water and came up with this trout that had to be nearly a foot long. He tried repeatedly to take off, and also to reposition the trout to swallow it. Unfortunately for him, he eventually lost the trout.
The subject was too far away and because it was late in the day, the light was too low in the horizon to get a good photo. What you see is the result of a significant crop as well. I took the photo with a Nikon D300 and 200-400 mm lens with a 1.4TC.
Trout were planted in the lake that day and friends shared great Osprey photos. I took off work late in the afternoon and arrived to late for the best action.

Cool shot Patrick, I've never seen a gull pull a big trout out like that.
