Gold Glow at Heceta
Near the end of teaching a one week private workshop/tour (The Pearls of Oregon) my client and I were completely engrossed in a heavy fog layer that I thought might break right at sunset. We raced the The Heceta Lighthouse and just as the sun set, the fog layer began to break and the most unusual golden glow radiated for about a minute as we both shot our long exposures. No "Orton" glow effect was used in post production. We used both a circular polarizer and a 9 stop ND filter. Almost all work was completed in Lightroon 4 raw.

Know what is WEIRD? This is the SAME FILE as this one:

http://www.naturephotographers.net/imagecritique/ic.cgi?a=vp&pr=189376&CGISESSID=4e58671a74fac92a52f948446745d76e&u=30253

but for some reason this forum PNWNP is color managing it differently (and wrong). Here is biases toward red where the other does not. That is WEIRD!

Mark,

I presume you have embedded the sRGB profile in the images you have posted? If so then this is truly weird. I am viewing your image with Mozilla Firefox configured to properly render an image with the sRGB profile embedded. It will be interesting to hear from the forum administrators.

Yes I embed!

Very cool shot Mark! You sure nailed this beauty of a shot. FYI, both files look the same on my Mackbook Pro. :toast:

Mark,

The image posted in the PNWNP is in the jpg format but the image in the Man & Nature gallery when viewed has been converted to the gif format and greatly reduced in file size. I do know that when converting from the jpg format to the gif format that significant color and quality shifts can occur. The gif color pallet is significantly less than the jpg color pallet. Just Google the search phrase jpg vs gif to learn more.

It would be nice if one of our PNWNP moderators would jump in here is help resolve this question.

Mark, on my screen using Firefox, I can see the difference but it is vary subtle. In any case, this is an excellent and beautiful image. I have not had the pleasure of witnessing light like this at Haceta, let alone the skill to capture it so well. Beautiful work!

What a gorgeous shot, mark! So well made.

Philip, I take note of your comment and will ask about the problem.

I am on Safari. My wide gamut monitor is calibrated for web. This is the first image on NPN that is not coming up right. Here it has a slight redish tint, but the original is gold. Here it is correct too:

Thanks everyone.

I'm not sure what's going on Mark. Unfortunately, using Firefox and a regular-gamut monitor I can't see the difference; they look exactly the same. (I even copied them both into Photoshop and used it to confirm that.) That makes me think it is a browser or monitor (gamut) issue.

Regardless, that's a crazy good shot of that icon!
