American Kestrel
Sometimes I believe the local refuge Kestrels get the "word" thru their grapevine, when I'm leaving home and they hide. This one however did not get the word yesterday and I was able to get a few shots in before his departure. Morning fog had me using a higher ISO then I prefer and then somehow I moved the f stop to 5.6 when it should have been at f/8.

Larger version available, Thanks for stopping!

canon 7D
canon 600mm f4.L + 1.4 TC
F/5.6 1/3600 ISO 1600
auto window beanbag lens rest, CS5, LR 3, NIK's suite

Craig,

I like this one. The head tilt is perfect. Even at 5.6 all looks sharp. I might crop off some of the stick below the bird. Thanks for sharing.

What an uncomfortable look perch. Yet another great shot. Even when you make a mistake! What is your magic?
Craig, someday we have to see all this in your guide to bird life of Ridgefield NWR. But I'd settle for Craig's guided tour!

Very nice Craig. I like the eye contact and colors. The only critique I have is the diagonal line originating in the upper left corner. I'm not sure what it is, but it goes almost all the way down to the bird.

Scott, I just wanted to thank you for pointing out the diagonal line from ULC down to bird. I must have somehow put it there when I was resizing for the posting??? It's not on my processed full size image.
Regards, Craig

I'm drawn to the eye, but what a beautiful bird and pose. :)

Kestrels are so photogenic! (As you note, if you can ever catch up to them  ) I agree that this is a stunner, no matter the f-stop.
