Red Grouse
Canon EOS 7D, 600mm f4 IS, 1.4x conv, 1/640, f5.6, ISO 400, RAW, CS 2, full frame.

Hi All,

Just got back from 4 stunning days staying with a friend in Northumberland. Red Grouse have been on my hit list for a while and I was blessed with fantastic oppurtunities and glorious weather. I will be going back when the heather is in bloom. Also got some images of Golden Plover and a distant Black Cock. A Short Eared Owl gave me the run around and evaded my view finder !!

All comments welcome

Regards

Great pose, bit tight at the bottom (and I know about that). Would love to see it big.

Cracking image Bob, the BG and heather colours compliment the bird very well.

Hi Rob, good colours with a light enough BKG to help separate the subject. Another vote for more room at the foot of the image, however with a fixed lens & focus points available, this might have determined your framing?

Thanks for the kind words. I should have took the converter off, but he was sat by the road side and the lens just went out the window !! Steve is right, I had selected the upper most top left focus point and I had to put that half way down his neck to get his feet in ! Still I have shots of others that are not so tightly framed ;)

Excellent - like the composition of the bird and the patch of heather. Dry Deer grass makes a nice BG - I suppose it has to be useful for something.

I normally don't like the subject this large in the frame, but the head turn makes all the difference here giving the illusion of space when following its gaze. :toast: :toast:
