OK - I'm still trying to get this digital thing down. I've been thinking about an avitar, but can't seem to get a 48x48 image to be under 10 kb. Any suggestions? I'm guessing that it has to do with the resolution, but I'm not having any luck. I may just need to invest more time into it, but thought some kind soul might give me a hint. I'm using photoshop cs2. Thanks
Size your image to 48 X 48 pixels, convert the file to sRGB, then go to "File>Save for Web". Be sure to uncheck the box on the right side for "ICC Profile". A "Quality" of around 80 to 90 should be fine to get you a small enough file, but you can go lower if necessary. Resolution is irrelevant, the problem is in embedding a color profile in the file that is both unnecessary and bloats the file size.

Jay,
I'm glad you asked that question. I've been diddling with an avitar and have a 48 by 48 that I can't get to weigh in at less than 20k. Thanks for asking, and thanks for the info, Bob.
In the "Save for Web" options box, find the little arrow to the right of the Preset pull-down. Choose "optimize to file size" and enter 10k. It will compress the file just enough to create a 10k file. (These instructions are specific to CS2, since that's what I'm looking at right now, but I believe the dialog box was the same in previous versions of Photoshop).
