The Mitten Shadow event was a great time for me to shake off the winter hibernation blues. Doug Koepsel and Richard Olson were there and we had a fine time around a campfire that evening.
Winds were thankfully calm and it was warm, but the clouds appeared just as the shadow was starting to be cast. Fortunately the sun shone through for about a minute allowing us to capture the event just at the right time.
Three images taken at different focal lengths and blended for optimum sharpness.
The next day I traveled to Rattlesnake Canyon in NE Arizona to catch some midday bounce light in a rarely visited slot canyon.
All images from here are 2-3 exposures taken at different focal lengths and blended for optimum sharpness.
Wonderful stuff, John. Looks like a well-spent weekend (except for the spring cleaning, of course!)

Wow, John! These are excellent! I'll have to put the mitten event on my calendar for next year :)
I love the sandstone work. I haven't been to rattlesnake canyon...also now on my growing list of places within driving distance!
"Above and Beyond" may be my favorite. I love how I can't tell if the purple is in front of or behind the glowing area. Beautiful work. See you in Moab?

Just more awesome captures from you John! These are fantastic...I love the canyon shots. They look a lot like Antelope.

John, good to see you again. The slot canyon shots are excellent. Great shapes and color/light range.
Really nice set, John - my favourite is "Arch Detail". The interleaving of the sandstone layers is great. If it were mine, the only change I'd consider would be to crop a small amount from the bottom (I think it would lessen the predominance of the foreground sandstone layer, plus I prefer the fatter aspect ratios...).
"Above & Beyond" is just great too.

A very nice set here. I really like that third shot of the series. Did you have to go through a private tour to go through this canyon? I've heard about it before and was interested in some day visiting it.
Thanks for the comments and the suggestions. I wondered about cropping the Arch shot and may do so.
Rattlesnake Canyon is an offshoot of Antelope Canyon located downstream of the Upper Antelope.
I did have to hire a guide for two hours, but luckily it was the day before prices doubled for all tours.
Apparently, the crowds in Upper Antelope are growing so large that folks are complaining. So their answer is to double tour prices in hopes of lowering the numbers. Hmmmm....
Anyway, I had Rattlesnake to myself!
Thanks again, folks!

Beautiful! I love the different view of the mitten event and the framing. Very nice slot canyon shots as usual!

Great work John! The detail in the rattle snake photos is great and processing spot on.
The shadow photo with the cedar tree framing it top notch and adds interest to the photo. I think it might take a smidge of ccw rotation...maybe it's my eyes :)
Thanks again for the PS help!!

I like your different take on the mittens in that first one. The first shot of Rattlesnake Canyon is superb as well. My wife is still waiting for me to do some spring cleaning!!
Excellent collection John! I like the shadow in the first image a lot, but I am even more partial to the shots at Rattlesnake Canyon. The comp on al 4 is terrific...I really like how the last one appears as 3 separate layers because of the color changes.

Wonderful shots as always John. I'll be down your way in early May. I hope to get to see you.

Very cool shots. The Mitten shot is very unique. Have seen that comp before and it is beautiful. Love the "Arch Detail". That is one trippy shot. Took me while to figure out what I was looking at
