Canyons in Canyonlands
A film image from Canyonlands. I was spending an afternoon working black and white film images. After getting the image in monochrome, I decided to run a sheet of Velvia 100F through the camera and got this.

You can see the set up and both the color and B+W versions on my large format blog

Boy that's a wide range of contrast Darren and you handled it admirably. Canyonlands is a rugged, foreboding and desolate landscape. You did a great job of conveying that aspect.

The critique I often get on photos like this is lack of "pop".
I presume the nit comes from not tweaking color, contrast, etc.
One has to determine the end desire in the photographer's mind--realism or sales.
Everyone says color sells but often becomes slightly "cartoonish".
So, I guess you have to respond and share with us what you were accomplishing 1) using film [higher dynamic range?] and 2) in any processing you did.
Breathtaking place. You see a lot of them...

Thanks.

Hard to do much with this. It is middle of the day light and while I could maybe try to zing the colors I am not sure if that makes it any better of an image. I made a B+W here but this color image just seemed better than the monochrome. I know middle of the day is really hard to make great images but an afternoon in Canyonlands is still one great way to spend the day.

Daren, I have not been there but it is on my list. Thanks for sharing.
