I post this auger buzzard from my recent trip to Ndutu in sympathy with Barry. It flew straight at me and whilst I got some nice frames along the way this was the shot that had my prefered wing shape

Great head on shot Bob, just a tiny bit too big in the frame...but nice as is!

That is soooooo close Bob. Even with the clipped wingtips it is still a worthwhile image and I'd crop some off the top of the frame. Very dramatic eye.
A little too tight in frame for me too Bob, having the clipped wing tips and the space above & below isn't quite working. As you had the SS I would have increased the DOF to obtain more detail in the image.

Thanks for the comments guys and I am aware of the faults but this was a shot posted to go with Barry's flight shot with wings clipped.
Steve, I kept the f4.5 because I expected it to pass in front of a tree that I wanted OOF but of course it just flew staright at me instead

As I said we all keep those "nearly shots". Perhaps we photoraphers have a masochistic streak and like to torture ourselves?
Still a cracking shot, I take comfort in the knowledge I'm not alone in clipping wing tips.

We all clip wing tips, more often than not in my case. There is some great detail in here, and I like it as a shot. Unfortunately I have to agree that it is just too tight in the frame.

Nick.
Another fine example of what I do best, clipping the wing is a specialty of mine, in fact I'm a bloody expert at it
Impressive looking bird btw
