If my memory is correct, both Standunes and Cloudman have shot these conditions of fog laying in the valley along Highway 24 below Pikes Peak before. And, if memory serves me, they have both complained of reaching their position above the fog a little later than they had hoped for. Both of you can correct me if my memory is failing guys. I was 10 to 15 minutes late for what was probably the best light of sunrise, but I'm not going to complain for getting to see this wonderful sight. The fog receded back down the valley, but was still lingering by the time I got down to Woodland Park and drove back to Garden of the Gods. Certainly worth getting up so early to drive there.

So, if you ever plan to try for a shot like this, don't lay in bed for that extra 10 minutes, and leave early! You have been schooled.

Comments and critiques always welcome, and thanks for looking,

Morris

Morris, these are my absolute favorite conditions and I've shot scenes like this up there so many times that I've both missed, and gotten, the best light. But I only see my shots and rarely get to see others' work like this. Your shot is sublime! Was this yesterday? I went out today and two days ago, but had stuff to finish at home yesterday, which appeared to be the perfect day for these conditions. It was killing me to not be up there, but I reasoned that since I think I have a broken front shock or shock mount, it would probably be best for me not to go up on a bumpy, greasy dirt road til I fix it.

Yes, TC this was yesterday. And thanks. And this is my favorite condition, too when the clouds are below you while up in the mountains. They were calling for fog for the morning, and when I got up at 4:30!!! the conditions showed fog in the Springs, to I took a chance. I have never been up Rampart Range road this way, so I didn't know how far I had to go to get above the fog. It took forever! And the road is NOT in the best condition. I will have to have my kidneys checked soon. And you are dead on with a bumpy, greasy dirt road description. Hope you get your vehicle fixed soon.

Jack, this place is not secret. It's a lookout right on Rampart Range Road about 10 to 15 miles? above Garden of the Gods. A great lookout anytime probably. Highway 24 is down there below the fog, so it definitely shows better covered up like this.

Thanks for filling in, Morris. :toast:

Glad I saw the one in the Landscape gallery before commenting. I like the wider angle of view that this horizontal image projects, but I really like the light and foreground detail in the vertical version. A two or three image vertical stitch would have given you the very best of both.
