Spring has Sprung
Hey everyone. I've just returned from an 8-week break from social networking. It was nice to slow down from the never ending flow of information and take more time to just be quiet. I highly recommend it! Just be prepared for the withdraw shakes during the first week.

In the last two weeks I've finally started to hit it hard with photography as I gear up for another busy spring/summer/autumn. I know that we all like to see photos so I'll fill this thread with a bunch of my recent stuff. It is not necessarily stunning but some of it you may find interesting. As always, I'd love to hear your suggestions or comments.

Oh, I also just remembered (seriously) that tomorrow is the 5th anniversary of my gallery. Thanks to all of you for your help and encouragement these last years.

#2. This is from Wednesday night on Trail Ridge Road as a storm moved out.

#3. The pasque flowers have been out everywhere lately. I have such a large collection of these now.

#4. Here's another

#5. This was during a snowstorm that we had just over a week ago, up at Dream Lake.

#6. I skied up Flattop in shorts and a t-shirt the next day to get this image. I forgot to put sunscreen on my white legs and now they are as red as a lobsters.

#7. Earlier that morning I climbed up on the rocks in Lumpy Ridge hoping for something dramatic but this was all I could see

#8. Then just at sunrise the clouds parted and gave me this wonderful view.

I have lots more from various places but don't want to over do it here. I look forward to seeing what everyone else is capturing this spring. :wavey:

Nice collection. I liked the whole story told, also  . All the images were great to look at, while #1, #2, #3, #5, #8 stuck out the most. I admire how you handle each exposure and bring them to life with vibrant colors that are not overdone. Each seems very naturally processed.

I'm getting excited about spring as well! Do you happen to know when the wildflowers will be a good bloom up in RMNP? I don't get up there as often as I wish I could, so each trip has to be real worth it... I'm guessing mid-May to the beginning of June?

BTW, please over do it here...

Amazing work as always, Erik! And, I love Pasque flowers! :jump: No favorites possible here as there is such a wide variety of excellent shots. Good to see your work again, and I hope to tip my hat in person soon for your 5th anniversary of your gallery. :toast:

How the heck did you reign in all those wonderfully bright whites on the Flattop Mountain shot??? These are all cool as can be, but the processing in that one is incredible, notwithstanding the obvious epicness of the shot itself.

And another thing: I never even thought of adding wings to the dust spots in my images to make them look like birds, like you did in that first one.

Welcome back, Erik. A great variety in this series. I especially like the Dream Lake snowstorm composition.

Todd, the winged dust spots will be a new CS6 feature for those of us that have really dirty sensors.
Posted by Erik Stensland on April 13, 2012 at 6:54 PM
I'm glad you liked that effect Todd! As Bill said, it is a new feature with CS6. I think you can already find it in the free beta version.

Nathan, this is looking like a very dry year and a very early spring so I'm simply confused and not quite sure what to expect. I'm guessing that we will start to see golden banner starting to arrive in the next week or two and then the lower meadows of RMNP could start looking good possibly even by the first week of May. Generally the best flowers are in the high mountain lakes around the last week of July or first week of August, but who knows this year.

Nice to 'see' you again, and what a way to reappear!
The first is so beautiful and pastoral, with superb light.
Love the twin blossoms and the environment surrounding the flowers in #3.
And #8 is just sublime with so much beauty throughout. None of it distracting from the overall composition, though.
Every element in there contributes to the sheer beauty of the image. Bravo!! :toast:

Your images are getting me fired up to get into RMNP again after the predicted heavy snow hits this weekend! Hope my boss doesn't mind me taking a day off.
Since I am relatively new to this group, I first didn't realize the gallery in Estes Park was yours. I almost always visit when I take a trek into RMNP. The images in your gallery are breathtaking for sure.
Although I feel fortunate to live in Wellington and only have an hour drive to get to the park, I can't image how great it must be actually living in Estes Park. You are truly "living the dream"

Great series Erik - #5 is my favorite ..

Welcome back, Erik! Congratulations on the anniversary of the gallery. That is a wonderful accomplishment!
This is a great series of images really getting me going for spring. I agree that it is such an odd year where everything might start happening early...very different from last year when everything was incredibly late!
I love the pasque flowers, but I'm a little biased. They took up about an hour of my time yesterday on Mt. Galbraith. :wavey:

You have a wide variety of nice images. #5 is my choice if you are seeking preferences. Faded background, just a few main elements and the kidney snow pool along the rock- all combine to make a very nice winter image.

I am with todd on these! The strong but simple elements work well on 5.

These are really nice! I love the one of Dream Lake! The simplicity and almost monochromatic tones are very strong!
